Why YOU Love Functional Medicine!
You’re not feeling so good.
You don’t sleep.
Your belly always feels off. Your belly is bloated. Your belly is expanding.
People frequently ask you if you have a cold, you say it’s just allergies.
Your hands and feet seem to always feel cold.
You can’t sleep through the night.
You haven’t woken up feeling like a spring chicken in you don’t know how long.
You don’t like how you’re showing up as a parent…as a partner.
Because of your low energy you’re not doing the things you used to love – only if you could remember what they were. That’s right, the memory…. walking in the kitchen and routinely wondering why you walked in there in the first place…
You can’t lose the weight and keep it off.
Your knee is getting worse.
You know something is off with your health. You just know something is off with your thyroid.
You just got diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, or your third, and are frightened by the standard treatment options of shutting down your immune system with drugs.
What to do?
Is this all part of the normal program called “aging”.
Just in case it’s not, you grab an appointment with your GP and receive the standard 10-15 minute chat about what’s the matter.
You barely make eye contact as they type away on their computer.
Your trusted health care provider then hands you a prescription, or two, possibly tells you to lose a little weight (and you’re thinking, looks like you need to lose more than I do!), but you’re told that everything is ‘fine’.
All done.
Is this what it’s come down to?
Are there any other options for healing other than taking another pill for say, your high blood pressure?
Your so called “high cholesterol”…who sets the standards of what high is anyway?
Your insomnia. Your moods. Your low thyroid.
Is this the route to being vital?
Does this approach actually make anyone healthier, ever?
Nope.
And chances are, this approach of ‘here’s-a-prescription-see-you-at-your-next-visit’ may even make you more sick, which is the biggest reason we at Apex are dedicated to helping our clients restore their health ‘from their cells to their souls’, using the principles of Functional Medicine.
Ok, here’s the part where you ask – sounds great but just what is “Functional Medicine?”
Here’s what it is – well, we think it’s the most effective, impactful and sustainable way to take care of yourself, regardless of those of you who have chronic health issues or just want to be the best version of you.

1. Functional Medicine is all about root cause.
In Traditional Medicine, doctors are trained to first make a diagnosis than set up a treatment protocol for that diagnosis which is comprised of drugs and/or surgery.
Conventional Medicine is the right place to be at for acute care crisis management such as a heart attack, stroke, a broken arm or disease process.
But they’re not the guys to go to to prevent the crisis from happening in the first place, only for responding as a last ditch effort.
In Functional Medicine we are not too concerned about making diagnosis and instead, place our attention on the underlying loss of function within the major systems in your body.
Dysfunction is the root cause of the disease process so that’s where our focus lies.
2. Functional Medicine is an alternative, natural application of health care.
True healing doesn’t happen overnight, unlike what a pill might do for high blood pressure or insomnia.
With Functional Medicine, time is involved.
Time to listen to our client’s experience, their thoughts and observations on why they feel the way they do.
Care and patience.
We put our attention on the person who is experiencing the dysfunction rather than the dysfunction or disease the person has.
We regularly spend an hour or more with clients, listening to their stories, digging deep into their health history, probing for answers, asking about their families’ history, looking at environmental or lifestyle patterns that have been overlooked.
More often than not we discover undiagnosed infections, conditions and imbalances and then quickly put our attention on addressing them.
No two clients, even our identical twin sister clients, share the same reason for why they lost their health in the first place.
And no two have same the care plan.
As Functional Medicine practitioners, our healing plans are personalized, bio-individualized to the specifics of each client, something that traditional medicine doesn’t have the tools, training or time for.
3. Functional Medicine is not assembly-line medicine.
Our current health care system is, to a large extent, governed by profit-driven conglomerates that essentially force physicians to manage huge caseloads and keep people moving through the system as quickly as possible.
These physicians are stuck in the system just the same as you and I, and I can tell you, because these are my friends and colleagues, that most of them don’t like it one bit.
It’s mass-produced, assembly line, quick-fix, put-a-band-aid-on-it medicine, with little hope of creating long-term health.
To its credit however, Conventional Medicine is great at managing medical and surgical emergencies, medical crises, acute infections and trauma, but falls way short when it comes to healing and reversing chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, digestive problems, chronic fatigue, autoimmune diseases, functional disorders, inflammatory issues, joint problems and stress related disorders.
This is where Functional Medicine shines bright with its more comprehensive, thoughtful approach.
4. Functional Medicine is the best of both worlds.
Functional Medicine is not an either/or system, but rather a true combination of Conventional Medicine and many different alternative and complementary therapies.
It acknowledges the strengths of Conventional Medicine for acute and crisis-care, but also realizes that this approach does not have the tools for preventing and treating chronic diseases.
Unlike conventional physicians, we are able to tap into all the tools of healing—drawing from Western, Eastern, alternative, preventative and integrative medical practices—to help our clients heal.
By pulling from all of these approaches and by paying special attention to diet, exercise, nutrition, supplementation and the workings of the mind, we’re not just giving patients a band-aid, we’re giving them the tools to create sustainable wellness and vitality.
To me, this is what true healing is all about.
5. Functional Medicine is all about you.
In simplest terms, think of it as the ultimate in personalized, one-on-one, therapeutic relationships.
It’s a health-focused, patient-centric partnership, in which practitioner and client work together to dig deep and find out the causes of illness and disease.
We examine not only the patient, but also their unique history, environment, lifestyle and underlying factors, and then develop a health-enhancing, usually drug-free plan to help restore the patient to good health and get him or her on a life-long path of wellness.
With Functional Medicine, we look beyond the laundry list of symptoms; we take the whole person into account.
6. Functional Medicine is true Health Care.
Functional Medicine is true health care, unlike the disease care model of Conventional Medicine.
We now have the knowledge to go beyond the current crisis care model and offer people a much better approach to their health.
We can incorporate lifestyle medicine, nutrition, supplements, stress reduction and exercise to improve the functioning of organs as a means of preventing disease and creating vibrant, sustainable health.
We can address the healthcare needs of the 21st century….Let’s do it!!
